Family Start

Family Start helps families/whānau who are struggling with challenges or problems that make it harder for them to care for their baby or young child.

What is Family Start?

Family Start is an intensive home-visiting programme. We work with whānau/families to support and improve children’s growth & health, learning & relationships, family circumstances, environment and safety. We focus on strengthening parenting/caregiving skills, and we support the achievement of goals.

How does it work?

Family Start is free and participation is voluntary. Whānau/families can self-refer or be referred to us by other community agencies. One of our Family Start team members (Kaimahi) will meet with you to discuss your circumstances and how we can best support you and your whānau/family. If you meet our eligibility criteria, and choose to enroll, you will be visited at least twice a month by your Family Start Kaimahi.

Am I eligible?

We work with whānau/families who reside in the immediate Masterton boundary, and in South Wairarapa. We can start working with your family at any time from when the mother is three months pregnant through until the child's 5th birthday (if needed). We are happy to come and meet with you to discuss our programme and your eligibility.
